No one has written a great symphony or even a concerto about Africa. Why is that so?

The music of Africa is too wild, too free, too accustomed to death for romance. Africa is too crude a stage for the small scratching of the violin, too majestic for the piano. Africa is only right for drums. The drum carries its rhythm but does not steal its music. Timpani is the background, the music of Africa is in the voices of the people. They are its instruments, more subtle, more beautiful, infinitely more noble than the scratching, thumping, banging and blowing of brass and wind and vellum, strings and keyboard.

  1. I posted something previously but I'm not sure if it went through. sorry if this is duplicated. I was a PCV in Rubengerea from 1990 to 1993. I taught at the Ecole Secondaire and lived in the teacher housing which was located next to the school. The school was run by the Presbyterian church. Reading through your blog brought back so many memories. Let me tell you, muzungu is a word that will be etched into your brain.

  2. The book you quoted from was an amazing book, one of my favorites! It is such a gripping, descriptive book. Another book about Africa which made a great impression on me was The Poisonwood Bible. How much longer will you be in Africa? Will you be able to visit your folks in Yangon?
