How to be a Peace Corps rockstar:

10. Laugh with them, because otherwise they are just laughing at you

9. Learn that "close" is a relative term, relative to the entire country, so everything will always be close

8. Say hello to everyone, especially the kids; even if that's all you can say

7. Take it as a compliment when the kids hold your hand walking to school

6. Komera

5. Don't try to turn off your alarm clock, as it will most likely be a rooster, cow, goat, etc.

4. Packages are lifesavers, when they make it through to you

3. Learn to love the smokey, plastic, metallic, or chlorine taste of your filtered water

2. This is Africa

1. Expect... well don't really have expectations because nothing goes as planned... but it all works out in the end

  1. Hi, Kerry. I just found your blog via your mom via Facebook. I will try to check in on what you are doing from time to time. I have a niece who is about your age who just completed a year teaching in Mexico City with a missionary group. She loves being in Mexico and has signed up for three more years in their church planting activities. I hope your experiences prove to be just as enriching as hers have been! Africa is such a wonderful place and I know your parents will love being able to visit you there!

  2. Dear Kerry,

My teammates and I are students at the University of Pennsylvania, and part of a research team under the mHealth Alliance of the United Nations Foundation (UNF). Two of us are ex-Peace Corps Volunteers (Togo and Dominican Republic). Our goal is to study how mobile technology can address maternal health issues in four countries, including Rwanda.

We will be traveling to Rwanda from August 23 – 27. We would be very interested to meet with persons or NGOs in Rwanda responsible for maternal healthcare projects. I am very curious about the health clinic that you are working with right now, and I would like to talk to you more about it if possible.

If you can, please forward this onto any other volunteers or people you may know that may help us while we are visiting.

Thank you so much and it has been so much fun reading your blog - it takes me back to my own PC experience!

    Best,
